Homemade brownies

I am constantly tweaking recipes to make it not just good, but great!

Now I know the idea of hot sauce in brownies sounds a little off…… but trust me when I tell you that adding Habanero in this recipe makes amazingly moist, flavorful brownies!

Blueberry & Hot Sauce Brownie Recipe

This recipe is tweaked from our favorite brownie recipe. Seeing as though we are in blueberry season I added some super healthy, antioxidant rich blueberries and my secret ingredient – hot sauce to give our favorite recipe a bold summer makeover!

Not to give it some rich boldness, add in 1 1/2 teas El Yucateco Green Hot Sauce. [I know it sounds odd, but it won’t make it spicy, just give it a rich, full flavor to your chocolate!]

If you want to make it extra chocolaty feel free to add in 3/4 cup of chocolate chips [any kind]. I think dark chocolate are extra good with the blueberries.

Spread brownie batter in your prepared pan and bake 25-30 minutes.

Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting. Your family will love the rich boldness the secret ingredient adds to these brownies! For your leftover hot sauce, check out El Yucateco hot sauce recipes.

FAQs

What determines whether a brownie is fudgy or cakey? ›

Fudgy brownies have a higher fat-to-flour ratio than cakey ones. So add more fat—in this case, butter and chocolate. A cakey batch has more flour and relies on baking powder for leavening. The amount of sugar and eggs does not change whether you're going fudgy or cakey.

How do you make brownie mix richer? ›

Fall Back on Butter

Most boxed brownies use canola or vegetable oil. Sub in the same amount of melted butter for brilliant results. This makes the brownies that much richer and more delicious. Bonus points if it's high-quality, like our Test Kitchen's favorite butter.

Why are my brownies tough and chewy? ›

The molasses content in brown sugar is what is responsible for chewy yet soft brownies. If you don't want chewy brownies, completely keep brown sugar out of the picture. If you do want chewy brownies and it's not mentioned in your recipe, add 3-4 tbsp of brown sugar in the end for beautifully chewy brownies!

How do you jazz up brownies? ›

Crushed potato chips, pretzels, and salted nuts stirred in or sprinkled on before baking can add textural interest, plus a little savoriness that can make the rich chocolate flavor more pronounced. A shower of sea salt or flaky salt like Maldon over baked brownies before slicing makes for a dramatic, sparkly finish.

What makes brownies more moist? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

What is the number one brownie mix? ›

Best Overall Brownie Mix: Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Premium Brownie Mix. When you want a delicious brownie for a baking emergency—or just to treat yourself—look no further than a box of Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownies.

What happens when you add extra eggs to brownies? ›

If you opt to add more eggs, say double the amount, something interesting happens. Even though you are adding more moisture, the air bubbles that you catch in the extra eggs add volume, which decreases the density of your final product. This makes your brownies rise and gives them a much more cake-like texture.

What happens if you use milk instead of water in brownie mix? ›

Brownie recipes traditionally call for water as it serves as a neutral liquid that hydrates the dry ingredients. However, using milk instead of water can impart a creamier texture and richer flavor to your brownies. The milk's fat content adds a smoothness that water cannot provide, resulting in a more indulgent treat.

What happens if you add too much flour to brownies? ›

Too much flour? Go back to your edges - if they're not burnt, look a good colour (similar to the centre) but the brownie is too cakey and dry throughout, the recipe probably included too much flour.

What happens if you add too much cocoa powder to brownies? ›

Cocoa powder is a staple for brownies and chocolate cakes alike. But adding cocoa powder alone may transform your brownies from fudgy to cake-like. SBS Australia notes that cocoa powder has a texture similar to flour. Therefore, adding too much cocoa powder can dry out the batter.

What happens if you add less butter to brownies? ›

I didn't use enough butter in this batch and it muted the flavor of the brownies. I thought less butter would have made these brownies less mushy than their counterparts, but they were just as soft in the center and held onto their chewy edges.

What happens if I put too much butter in brownies? ›

Whether you use butter, margarine, or vegetable oil, putting too much in your brownie batter causes it to be greasy. Don't worry, you're not alone. Many people fall into this trap when trying to substitute butter with oil.

What is the texture of a fudgy brownie? ›

Fudgy brownies are dense, moist, and intensely chocolatey. To achieve this texture, use more chocolate and less flour. Melt the chocolate and butter together to form a smooth base. Additionally, using a combination of melted chocolate and cocoa powder imparts a smoothness that perfectly complements the chewy quality.

How are fudgy brownies supposed to look? ›

Even fudgy brownies will pull from the edges once they've finished baking. You'll see that the edges look dry while the middle still looks soft or slightly wet. Chewy and cakey brownies will have dry edges with firmer-looking centers. The edges of chewy brownies might even look crispy—this is totally fine!

Are brownies supposed to be fudgy in the middle? ›

Brownies are perfect when the middle is just baked, so it sets to a fudgy, moist consistency - if your flour and baking powder are causing the edges to rise, cook and set too quickly, they will give the appearance of a sunken centre, even if the centre is perfectly cooked.
